Studio Joanna Laajisto is a Helsinki based design agency, founded in 2010. The studio has since become known for timeless interiors for hotels, restaurants, and workplaces, as well as product designs including lighting, furniture, and textiles.
From the start, Joanna´s philosophy has centered on sustainability: creating designs that are both visually and physically enduring, rooted in natural materials, and closely tied to their architectural and cultural context. For Joanna, meaningful and functional design is always more valuable than short-lived trends or superficial “wow factor.”
Today, her work is undergoing a significant transformation in response to the climate crisis. Recognizing that even her previous methods are no longer sustainable, she is reimagining her process to prioritize existing structures and reclaimed resources.
This shift demands flexibility and a new aesthetic language. The process is far from ready, and each project brings new lessons. Yet it demonstrates that design can create spaces of lasting beauty and meaning—while also respecting the earth’s limited capacity.
